私は2000年代の前半にニューヨークに在住した時に、John Hixson氏の下でクラリネットを５年間学ぶ機会を得ました。Hixson氏は驚くばかりの演奏テクニックのみならず、作曲家と作品について、それをとりまく文化的あるいは社会的な背景を含めて、非常に深い知識を有しており、そこから非常に多くのことを学ぶことが出来ました。毎週末、彼のスタジオにレッスンに通ったことは、私の今までの音楽活動の中で最も有益な経験となりました。帰国前にはマンハッタンにおいてソロリサイタルを開催することが出来ましたが、それはHixson氏の親身な指導があったらこそ実現したものです。私は、クラリネットを学ばれる方には、技術レベルの如何に関わらず、Hixson氏のレッスンを受けられることを自信を持ってお薦めするものです。
